2023 Surf Art Calendar - Tony Rogondino

2023 Surf Art Calendar

July

“The Bench”

By: Tony Rogondino

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

As we celebrate the 4th of July with family and friends, I wanted to pay tribute to the American flag and share what the view is like when sitting on my favorite bench. This shot sets the scene of a typical day at 33rd Street in Manhattan Beach looking past the bench over the grass to my local surf spot, with surfers in the water beyond the lifeguard tower

PERSONAL CONNECTION

The bench itself sits on the side of a small bluff, overlooking the beach and bike path that runs from Playa Del Rey all the way to Redondo Beach. From The Strand, you wouldn’t know it exists and it can only be seen when looking up from the beach where a small private seating area is carved out. As you walk the Manhattan Beach Strand, there are areas that are technically the front yards of the beach front homes, but these areas are public property and can be accessed by anyone. Some have grass, others have flowers, one has a putting green, another a hammock, but overall these “parklets” dot the landscape for anyone walking The Strand.

When I originally discovered the bench, it was a little worn down from years of salty sea air and sun, but recently the homeowner rebuilt it with redwood and modern design. As it was getting restored, I became friends with the contractor and dropped off a Surf Art Calendar so I have a sense of ownership over it and get jealous if anyone is sitting in my spot. Fortunately, it’s hidden away so I’m able to soak up the view north towards Malibu without having to share the bench that often. That being said, it’s also a gathering place for friends, place to make new friends or just take in the scene. It’s a place where kids can be seen playing on the grass, dogs chasing a ball, couples taking in the sunset or just enjoying everyday life within our beach community. The bench is one more reason why I love my neighborhood.

ARTIST BIO

While I wouldn’t consider myself an artist, I do like to take pictures of my journey and tell their stories. I consider myself a Luxury Real Estate agent, father, surfer and dedicated professional who hopes you enjoy my monthly letter about the art and artists who contribute to the Surf Art Calendar.
