2023 Surf Art Calendar - Andre Snyman

2023 Surf Art Calendar

January

“It Comes And Goes”

By: Andre Snyman

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

From the artist: “It comes and goes…” is in its essence inspired, as most of my work, by my love for the ocean. I spent a lot of time by the beach looking for surf and in the process stumble upon scenes that inspire me. ”It Comes and Goes…”is also a play on our search for meaning and purpose in life and I’ve come to the conclusion that everything is cyclical in life. One day there’s waves next day it’s flat and we’re only left to wonder why…

Also, illustrated by the poem below:

Come comes and

goes in waves, I

Am only led to

wonder why

It comes and goes

in waves, I

Am only led to

wonder why

PERSONAL CONNECTION

In doing research for the 2023 Surf Art Calendar, Andre’s work really stood out to me as being exceptional. His ability to create depth and understanding through the contrast of light and dark is powerful. I believe that this image is fitting for January because it is a time when we can start the year off fresh, giving attention to what may come and deciding what to let go.

ARTIST BIO

Andre’s work is inspired by his passion for the environment, ocean, and surfing. He mainly paints seascapes depicting distant horizons and dramatic and often moody skies. Always striving to capture natures moods with every seamless brush stroke. Peaceful, dreamy, and ethereal are phrases used by collectors and fellow artists to describe his work. Andre is a South African born artist currently living in Wilmington, NC. He has spent the last 12 years in the Caribbean, Central America, and California. He is a member of the South Bay Artist Collective where he regularly shows his work in the Resin Gallery and held a solo show titled “Ephemeral” in 2018. “I want my work to be a window into the soul of the natural world. Hopefully when viewing my work, I can connect the view with the elements, and they can feel the wind and salty air. Ponder the world and what lays beyond the horizon…"
