2022 Surf Art Calendar - Wade Koniakowsky

2022 Surf Art Calendar

October

“Las Gaviotas”

By: Wade Koniakowsky

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

From the Artist: I was commissioned by one of the homeowners at Las Gaviotas in Northern Baja. I've surfed and hung out there a bit over the years. Not a world class spot but it has its moments. After examining it from a number of angles, I decided to compose the scene (with the client's house in it) and make the surf look pretty epic. I was pleased. It seems to do justice to the place.

PERSONAL CONNECTION

I was first introduced to Wade’s art through the Togo’s Surf Art Tour, where I was the account lead for the experiential marketing campaign showcasing a group of 10 talented surf artists, and included one of his custom designs. For the campaign, each person painted their design on a custom surfboard, the surfboards were then displayed at events throughout Southern California through onsite activation and sampling, then voted on to determine who would be the winner.

What attracted me to his painting was that this surf spot in Mexico is where I remember getting a really great tube ride when I was 12 years old while staying there with my friend Andy Yamashiro and his family. It was one of those special waves that I will never forget. Over the years since then I have had some fantastic memories at Las Gaviotas with friends and family for various occasions and I feel this painting is a great representation of the beauty of the place and always enjoy going back.

I am grateful to be able to share Wade’s work with you and please make sure to check out more of it at www.Koniakowsky.com or IG @wadekoniakowsky
