2021 Surf Art Calendar - Alex Weinstein

2021 Surf Art Calendar

December

Wave Fiction, 2020

Oil on Panel, 58 Inches Diameter

By: Alex Weinstein

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

Wave fiction, 2020, is another in a long ongoing series of paintings of the ocean from the immersive perspective the artist knows so well as a life-long surfer. The piece is a loose yet evocative composition where the gestural drips and pours are used to emphasize both the painterly process and the fluid state of the subject, its temperature and movement.

PERSONAL CONNECTION

Alex is a ripping surfer, talented artist and a great guitar player who has a super cool wife and a big dog. They were my neighbors on 31st St. before buying a house in Redondo Beach. He has a smooth approach to riding waves and has written articles for The Surfer’s Journal. Alex is one of the most accomplished fine artists to have contributed to my calendar project and I am very grateful to share his work with you.

ARTIST BIO Alex Weinstein's work has been exhibited throughout California as well as New York, France, England, Australia, Japan and Brazil. His work has been both featured and reviewed in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Art in America, the Los Angeles times, XTRA Art Quarterly, The Providence Journal, The Surfer's Journal, Blue JAPAN, Surfer Magazine, the London Observer, Elle Decor Magazine, The Brown Alumni Magazine and others. In 2009, National Public Radio affiliate, Marfa Public Radio interviewed Weinstein in conjunction with a solo exhibition held in Marfa, Texas.

In 2014 Weinstein was the subject of a full-length feature film, Mana, about ten contemporary Southern Californian artists and their engagement with sea. The artists in the film were invited to exhibit their work at The Museum of Art History in Lancaster California for the summer months. In 2014 Weinstein was the subject of a book/film/gallery project entitled, The West is the Best, by French industrial designer Joran Briand. A number of exhibitions throughout France, accompanied the release of the limited-edition book, The West is the Best. Also, in 2014, Weinstein was selected to build and install a monumental outdoor sculpture for the City of Manhattan Beach, California. In 2020, Weinstein completed his first editioned work; a sculptural low table, the D4, working closely over a 3-year period with editions du cote, in Biarritz, France. The table was debuted at Collectible, February 2020, in Brussels, Belgium.
