“Hermosa Beach Sunset”

By: Dave Ramirez

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

From the artist: This classic south bay sunset was taken during the final moments of a late afternoon volleyball session at the Hermosa Pier. Shortly after this fire in the sky, the clouds and sun shifted into a beautiful pink and purple cotton candy for truly breathtaking finale to the day.  Living a block off the strand in Hermosa Beach were some of the best times of my life, and volleyball was the cornerstone of my fun and community.

ARTIST BIO

A San Diego native and teenaged surf bum, the call of the mountains took me to Durango, Colorado for college.  While there I fell in love with the majestic peaks of the southern Rockies and the vast and varied geographies of the Four Corners region... skiing at Purgatory and mountain biking in Moab were my backyard to play in.  After college I moved to the mountain hamlet of Telluride and spent 15 remarkable years living the mountain dream.  Blowing up first tracks powder days and ripping the throttle on my Honda 250 on 13,000 foot mountain passes were forged into my DNA.  Ironically my biggest passion in life would take me back to the ocean:  SCUBA diving trips during the offseason took me to some of the best diving in the Caribbean and Indonesia (fun fact: Colorado has the highest number of divers per capita in the USA).  Now back in San Diego for the long haul, that passion still thrives and I love getting my gills wet snorkeling and freediving the La Jolla cove looking for critters big and small.  Swimming with the leopard sharks in the summer makes my heart sing.  One of these days I'll rock that 7mm wetsuit and start diving locally, but until then my heart and mind will always be searching out the next tropical dive getaway.  And yes, I surf occasionally, but I'm a hack and I'm ok with that, and getting thrashed bodysurfing always has me popping out of the water with a ridiculous smile on my face.
