“Cardon Sunset”

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE
From the artist: Every year we spend a week at Cardon Adventure resort in Mexico and the sunsets are always amazing. Typically, the photos don’t do them justice but this particular night was an exception. Nothing says vacation like a pink and purple sky!
PERSONAL CONNECTION
Every surfer remembers their first board….. and the thread of this image is connected to just that. It was last August, about the time I was putting together the 2021 Surf Calendar, and I was speaking with Lauren and her husband Peter on the beach to see if they knew of anybody who had a surfboard for my daughter Emilie, as she was really getting into surfing with her friends that Summer, but was only riding a soft top longboard or riding borrowed boards from friends. Lauren, who’s a fantastic surfer and has a soft spot for Emilie said she had an old short board with a peach colored Roxy leash that would be perfect for Emilie and would be happy for her to have it. Emilie was excited not only for the board, but also that it came from Lauren who she really liked and immediately went to their house to go wax it up and take it for a turn. As you can see in the picture below, she was all smiles!
So, in addition to sending a traditional thank you card, I also wanted to honor Emilie’s first board by asking Lauren to share an image in the surf art calendar so that I could publicly thank Peter and her for their generosity. I knew that Lauren was an amazing designer and they love to travel, so was comfortable asking her for an image to share, which she gratefully did.
What I liked about this photo was the infinity pool, the surf out front and the hazy purple sunset. To me, this looks like the ultimate paradise. I also chose to put it in September because it marks the crossover from Summer to Fall, is reflective of the change of seasons and one of my favorite times of the year.
ARTIST BIO
Peter and Lauren Tripp are proud parents to Ozzie Rose, a beautiful 4-month-old girl. Peter is a lender at Onyx Capital and Lauren is a talented Retail designer for surf brands such as Hurley and RVCA. They are my neighbors in Manhattan Beach and some of the coolest people you’ll meet. They are the quintessential beach couple who love the ocean, going on surf trips and seem like they’re always having fun doing it.
