2022 Surf Art Calendar

July

“The Wave”

Timescape Morning, Noon, Sunset

36”x 54” Triptic (3 Canvases) in Oil

By: Don Young

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

From the artist: This is my concept, inspired by my career as a graphic designer. This painting is in a private collection and hangs over a jacuzzi bath tub and spa.

PERSONAL CONNECTION

Growing up in Point Loma, Don Young and his wife Jill lived three houses away from ours and were family friends. As a kid, I saw that Don was the coolest guy, who had great style driving in his Porsche and wearing his Ray Ban sunglasses. While I was in Jr. High School, my parents bought an original painting from Don of a surfer walking out on the reef at my local Sunset Cliffs surf break with a woman standing on the cliff overlooking the surfer. At the time, if I wasn’t in school or at the house, I was out front surfing at this spot. So, when my parents chose to buy the painting, I like to think they did because they could envision that it was my mom watching over me as I made my way out into the surf. The painting is still proudly displayed in my parents living room.

The Timescape Morning, Noon, Sunset Triptic from Don is an outstanding concept that he’s displayed beautifully. The painting shows hints of Red, White and Blue so in the spirit of the Independence Day celebration, I thought it fit well for the month of July. Wishing everyone a Happy 4th of July!

ARTIST BIO

Don Young graduated from San Diego State University with a B.A. degree in Art in 1966 with an emphasis in Graphic Communications. He was a designer for CRM Books and “Psychology Today” Magazine as well as serving as Art Director/Creative Director for multiple ad agencies. In 1978 he co-founded and directed The Design Quarter, a nationally recognized graphic design firm. After a 30-year career as an internationally acclaimed graphic designer and creative director, Don redirected his talent to fine art. He began honing his painting skills by combining his years of design and compositional development with traveling the world and studying the masters. In 1993 he founded Don Young Studio and began painting full time. Don’s paintings are now included in many prominent art collections throughout the US and abroad.

Don’s love of his craft and desire to share his process with his community has led him to his most recent venture, The Painting Studio in the Village of Rancho Santa Fe. He invites his neighbors and visitors to the area to come join him in his open studio, view completed works, and observe him work on current paintings.
