2022 Surf Art Calendar - Tony Rogondino

2022 Surf Art Calendar

September

“33rd Street Sunset”

By: Tony Rogondino

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

I have an evening routine where I take my Siberian Husky named Shiloh out for a neighborhood walk by the ocean before the sun sets. No matter what’s going on, she always gets excited around this time and does the happy dance to pull me out of the house. On this Fall evening as we were walking up the hill on the way back to my place, I snapped this picture of the sun setting, perfectly capturing a typical scene in Manhattan Beach with surfers in the water, families out on their patios enjoying drinks and locals walking the strand.

PERSONAL CONNECTION

I’ve read that Art is the expression of human creative skill and imagination, and a reflection of community. People from the same area appreciate similar things, which is evident in this picture by the number of people enjoying the sunset and hopefully why people enjoy the Surf Art Calendar.

The location where this picture was taken is my home. It’s where I am raising my daughter. It’s my community. So much of my life revolves around this area. I walk down 33rd street to go for a surf almost daily and it can sometimes take up to 20 minutes to go the three blocks from my house to the beach because I am able to enjoy conversations with neighbors as I make my way down to the ocean. Doesn’t matter about the surf, it’s about the people who take the time to share their story with me and want to hear about mine.

Of all the places I’ve traveled in the world, my neighborhood is uniquely both urban and suburban, a place where you are seen, but not disturbed, and is an illustration of the tapestry that makes this life so interesting.

ARTIST BIO

While I wouldn’t consider myself an artist, I do like to take pictures of my journey and tell their stories. I consider myself a Luxury Real Estate agent, father, surfer and dedicated professional who hopes you enjoy my monthly letter about the art and artists who contribute to the Surf Art Calendar.
