“Pelican”

STORY BEHIND THE IMAGE

Growing up in the state of Washington most of my family’s vacations were camping out.   I followed my father around as he took pictures of wild flowers and the native wildlife.  One of my favorite activities.  When I graduated with an engineering degree from Washington State University I moved to the South Bay.  I have been fortunate to live in Manhattan Beach for over 50 years.  My wife, Donna, and I raised our three children here. Living 5 blocks from the ocean I have always enjoyed our amazing variety of local wildlife.  In 2002 I discovered digital photography.  Suddenly I was not limited to a few pictures.  I immediately started taking my new digital camera on my long walks along the ocean.  Seals, dolphins and an amazing number of birds surrounded me.  Of these the graceful flight of the Brown Pelican was mesmerizing.  I was fortunate to capture this photo on a bright blue sunny day.  One of my many favorites from the time I spent along the surf line.

PERSONAL CONNECTION

I recently met Donn when I joined the Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach in 2023. Donn is the in-house photographer who documents the meetings and events that take place in the club and has been a member of the club for almost 50 years.
